Letters Patent for Creation of Duke of Buckingham and Chandos

George the Fourth, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith: To all Archbishops, Dukes, Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts, Bishops, Barons, Knights, Provosts, Freemen, and all other Our Officers, Ministers, and Subjects whatsoever to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting: Know ye that We of Our especial Grace and of Our certain Knowledge and mere Motion have advanced, preferred, and created Our right trusty and entirely beloved Cousin and Councillor Richard Marquess of Buckingham, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, to the State, Degree, Dignity, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, do by these Presents create, advance, and prefer, and We have appointed, given, and granted, and by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, do appoint, give, and grant, unto him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, to have and to hold the said Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid unto him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten or to be begotten, and in default of such Issue unto the Heirs Male lawfully begotten of the Body of Hester sometime Countess Temple, deceased (Great Grand­ mother of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham), and in default of such Issue to have and to hold the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Countess Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham aforesaid unto Our trusty and well-beloved Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville, only Daughter of Our trusty and well-beloved Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville, Esquire (commonly called Earl Temple), only Son of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, and after the Decease of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville, and in default of such Issue as well of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham as of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple, to have and to hold the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham aforesaid unto the Heirs Male of the Body of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville lawfully begotten, and in default of such Issue as well of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville as of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple to have and to hold the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Countess Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham aforesaid unto the Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple), lawfully to be begotten, severally and successively, one after the other, as they shall be in Priority of Birth, and after the Decease of the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (com­monly called Earl Temple) respectively, to have and to hold the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham aforesaid unto the Heirs Male of the Body and respective Bodies of such Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter lawfully to be begotten, the elder of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid to be preferred and to take before the younger of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of their respective Bodies, willing and by these Presents granting, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, that the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and the Heirs Male of his Body aforesaid, and in default of such Issue the Heirs Male of the Body of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple aforesaid, and every of them successively, may bear and have the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and that they and every of them successively may be called and stiled by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and that he the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and the Heirs Male of his Body aforesaid, and in default of such Issue the Heirs Male of the Body of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple aforesaid, and every of them successively, may in all things be held and deemed Earls Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and be treated and reputed as Earls, and that they and every of them successively and respectively may have, hold, and possess a Seat, Place, and Voice in the Parliaments and Publick Assemblies and Councils of Us, Our Heirs and Successors, within Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, amongst other Earls as Earls of Parliament and Public Assemblies [sic] and Councils, and also that the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and the Heirs Male of his Body aforesaid, and in default of such Issue the Heirs Male of the Body of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple aforesaid, may enjoy and use, and every of them successively may enjoy and use, by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, all and singular the Rights, Privileges, Pre-eminences, Immunities, and Advantages to the Degree of an Earl in all things duly and of right belonging which other Earls of this Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland have heretofore honorably and quietly used and enjoyed or ns they do at present use and enjoy, and in default of such Issue as well of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham as of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple, willing and by these Presents granting, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, that the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville may bear and have the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and that after the Decease of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid, and every of them successively, may bear and have the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and that she the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville may be called and stiled by the Name of Countess Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and that after her Decease the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid, and every of them successively, may be called and stiled by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and that she the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville may in all things be held and deemed Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and be treated and reputed as a Countess, and that after her Decease the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid, and every of them successively, may in all things be held and deemed Earls Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and be treated and reputed as Earls, and that the Heirs Male of the Body of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville aforesaid, and every of them successively and respectively, after the Death of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville, may have, hold, and possess a Seat, Place, and Voice in the Parliaments and Publick Assemblies and Councils of Us, Our Heirs and Successors, within Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, amongst other Earls as Earls of Parliament and Public Assemblies and Councils, and also that the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville, by the Name of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and after her Decease the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid, and every of them successively, by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, may enjoy and use all and singular the Rights, Privileges, Preheminences, Immunities, and Advantages to the Degree of a Countess and Earl in all things duly and of right belonging which other Countesses and Earls of this Our United Kingdom of Temple Grenville as of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple, willing and by these Presents granting, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, that the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) may successively bear and have the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and that after the Decease of the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) respectively, the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of such Daughter and Daughters, and every of them successively, may bear and have the Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and that the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) may successively be called and stiled by the Name of Countess Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and that after the Decease of the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) respectively, the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of such Daughter and Daughters, and every of them successively, may be called and stiled by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe in Our County of Buckingham, and that the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) may successively in all things be held and deemed Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and be treated and reputed as a Countess, and that after the Decease of the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple) respectively, the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of such Daughter and Daughters, and every of them successively, may in all things be held and deemed Earls Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and be treated and reputed as Earls, and that the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of such Daughter andDaughters, and every of them successively and respectively, after the Death and respective Deaths of such Daughter and Daughters, may have, hold, and possess a Seat, Place, and Voice in the Parliaments and Public Assemblies and Councils of Us, Our Heirs and Successors, within Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, amongst other Earls as Earls of Parliament and Public Assemblies and Councils, and also that the said Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple), by the Name of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and after the Death and respective Deaths of such Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple), the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of such Daughter and Daughters by the Name of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and every of them successively, may enjoy and use all and singular the Rights, Privileges, Preheminences, Immunities, and Advantages to the Degree of a Countess and Earl in all things duly and of right belonging which other Countesses and Earls of this Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland have heretofore honorably and quietly used and enjoyed, or as they do at present use and enjoy, the elder of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid to be preferred and to take before the younger of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of their respective Bodies: And moreover know ye that We, of Our further especial Grace, certain Knowledge, and mere Motion, have advanced, preferred, and created the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham to be Marquess of Chandos, and also to the State, Degree, Stile, Title, Dignity, Name, and Honour of Marquess of Chandos, and him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham We do by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, advance, make, and create Marquess of Chandos, and We have appointed, given, and granted, and by these Presents do appoint, give, and grant, unto the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham the Name, Degree, State, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honour of Marquess of Chandos, and him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, by these Presents, We do dignify, invest, and really enoble with the said Name, State, Title, Degree, Stile, Honour, and Dignity of Marquess of Chandos by girting him with a Sword, and putting a Cap of Honor and a Coronet of Gold on his Head, aud by giving into his Hand a Rod of Gold, to have and to hold the same Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, Title, and Honor of Marquess of Chandos, with all and singular Preheminences, Honors, and other Things belonging or appertaining to such Name, State, Degree, Stile, Dignity, and Honor of Marquess of Chandos unto the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten and to be begotten for ever, willing and by these Presents granting for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, that the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid, and every one of them successively, may bear and have the Name, State, Stile, Degree, Dignity, Title, and Honor of Marquess of Chandos, and that they and every one of them successively may be called and styled by the Name of Marquess of Chandos, and that he the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid, and every one of them successively, may in all things be held and deemed Marquesses of Chandos, and be treated and reputed as Marquesses, and that he the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid, and every one of them successively and respectively, may have, hold, and possess a Seat, Place, and Voice in the Parliaments and Public Assemblies and Councils of Us, Our Heirs and Successors, within Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, amongst other Marquesses as Marquesses of Chandos, and also that the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid may enjoy and use, and every one of them successively may enjoy and use, by the Name of Marquess of Chandos, all and singular the Honors, Rights, Privileges, Preheminences, Immunities, and Advantages to the State, Honor, and Dignity of a Marquess hi all things duly and of right belonging which other Marquesses of this Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland have heretofore honorably and quietly used and enjoyed, or as they do at present use and enjoy: And moreover it being Our Will and Pleasure to dignify the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham with the Title of Duke, and to admit him amongst the Dukes of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, of Our more abundant especial Grace, and of Our certain Knowledge and mere Motion, We have advanced, preferred, dignified, constituted, and created the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, also to the State, Degree, Stile, Title, Dignity, Name, and Honor of Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, do by these Presents advance, prefer, dignify, constitute, and create, and We have appointed, given, and granted, and by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, do appoint, give, and grant, onto him the saidRichard Marquess of Buckingham the Name, Body lawfully begotten and to be begotten for ever: And further We will and by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, do give and grant unto the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid, that he and his Heirs Male aforesaid, and every of them successively, may bear and have the Name, Stile, Title, State, Degree, Dignity, and Honor of Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and that they and every of them successively may be called and stiled by the Name of Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and that he the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid, and every of them successively, may be held and deemed Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, and be treated and reputed as Dukes, and that they and every of them successively may have, hold, and possess a Seat, Place, and Voice in the Parliaments of Us, Our Heirs and Successors, within Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, amongst other Nobles and Peers of this Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, and also that the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid may enjoy and use, and every of them successively may enjoy and use, by the Name of Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, all and singular the Rights, Privileges, Preheminences, Immunities, and Advantages to the State of a Duke in all things duly and of right belonging which other Dukes of this Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland have heretofore honorably and quietly used and enjoyed, or as they do at present use and enjoy; And, lastly, We will and by these Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, of Our more ample Grace, do grant that these Our Letters Patent, or the Inrolment thereof, shall be sufficient and effectual in the Law for the dignifying, investing, and really enobling him the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham and his Heirs Male aforesaid with the several and respective Names, Titles, Dignities, and Honors of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, Marquess of Chandos, and Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, and in default of Issue Male of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, for the dignifying, investing, and realty enobling the Heirs Male aforesaid of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple, deceased, with the Name, Title, Dignity, and Honor of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and in default of Heirs Male of the respective Bodies as well of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple as of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, for the dignifying, investing, and really enobling the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville with the Name, Title, Dignity, and Honor of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and after her Decease for the dignifying, investing, and really enobling the Heirs Male of her Body aforesaid with the Name, Title, Dignity, and Honor of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and in default of Heirs Male of the respective Bodies as well of the said Anne Eliza Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville as of the said Hester sometime Countess Temple and of the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham, for the dignifying, investing, and really enobling the Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple), severally and successively, with the Name, Title, Dignity, and Honor of Countess Temple of Stowe aforesaid, and after the Decease of such Second, Third, Fourth, and every other Daughter of the said Richard Plantagenet Brydges Chandos Temple Grenville (commonly called Earl Temple), for the dignifying, investing, and really enobling the Heirs Male of the Body and of the respective Bodies of every such Daughter with the Name, Title, Dignity, and Honor of Earl Temple of Stowe aforesaid, the elder of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of her Body to be preferred and to take before the younger of such Daughters and the Heirs Male of their respective Bodies, and this without any Investiture, Rites, Ornaments, or Ceremonies whatsoever in this Behalf due and accustomed, which for some certain Reasons best known to Us We could not in due Manner do and perform, any Ordinance, Use, Custom, Rite, Ceremony, Prescription, or Provision due or used, or to be had, done, or performed, in conferring Honors of this kind, or any other Matter or Thing, to the contrary thereof in anywise notwithstanding: We will also and by these Presents grant to the said Richard Marquess of Buckingham that he may and shall have these Our Letters Patent duly made under our Great Seal of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland without Fine or Fee, great or small, to be for the same in any Manner rendered, done, or paid to Us, in Our Hanaper or elsewhere to Our Use. In witness whereof we have caused these Our Letters to be made patent. Witness Ourself at Westminster the Fourth Day of February, in the Third Year of Our Reign.
