The Wynne Dairies

Betsey, Harriet and Eugenia Wynne kept detailed diaries. These are more social and less political than others of the age, and have been published in several editions. The first edition by Anne Fremantle was planned as four volumes:

  • I: 1789-1794. The early wandering life of the Wynnes
  • II: 1794-1798. The Wynnes in Ratisbon; their flight into Italy and their flight from Florence on Thomas Fremantle's ship at Leghorn; courtship and marriage of Thomas and Betsy
  • III: 1798-1820. The love affairs of Eugenia, Harriet & Justina; life in London and Buckinghamshire
  • IV: 1819-1857. Thomas Fremantle died in 1819 and the diaries cover Betsy's widowhood and the fortunes of her children.

Volume IV was not published. Subsequent editions have extracted highlights from Anne Fremantle's original three volumes and sadly do not have the elegance of her edition.
