STO 450

HEH STO 450 (Box 10). 20 November 1812.

Letter from Edward Arundell to Charles O’Conor. This document is written in the typically scrawling hand of Lord Edward Arundell. The paper is 240cm by 380cm bond. In the top left is the phrase ‘Bucks to wit.’ Below this is an irregular ink stain 80mm by 41mm signed ‘corporate seal of the undersigned.’ It gives the impression of being written in high spirits.

Bucks to wit
[Ink stain]
corporate seal of the undersigned

We the undersigned are of opinion, and are ready to maintain, that the Celtic language is not the original language from which all others are derived. That Adam, Eve, Cain, or Abel, never knew Celtic, that it did not exist before the confusion of tongues at Babel, and that Moses never did write in it. That ‘Adam’ never signified ‘son of the earth’ and that we the undersigned do not care a dam whether it did or not. That, (in case you may alter your opinion upon all these points, as it is most probable you will should it ever suit your purpose) we, the undersigned are moreover resolved that, should you in the course of any future argument ever get into a Roscommon Fever, we will not administer and consolation to you by the way of Febrifuge, but, on the contrary, we will use all our best and honest endeavours to irritate you, and make your life a burthen to you.

That we the undersigned are moreover of opinion and will strong by maintain it, that Doctor Milner is a fine fellow, and an orthodox prelate. That Doctor Troy  is right in suspending you. That Doctor Pointer  is right in writing against you. That you are a Jansenist ,[1] a Schismatic and Heretic. And probably will turn out to be the Antichrist. And that, as such you ought to be burned in this World and go to the Devil in the next. As witness our hands and seals this twentieth night of November A.D. 1812.

[1] Jansenist. Adherent of a Roman Catholic school of thought holding the doctrine of Cornelius Otto Jansen (1585–1638), who held that without the grace of God, men could not perform His commandments. His views were condemned as heretical in 1649 and again in 1653. Source: Oxford Christian Church.

[2] 'Nugent' is in writing of Arundell and it is not clear whether it indicates that Baron George Nugent was present.
