Poor Relief at St Mawes, CornwallHEH STG Box 294. Copy letter from Scrope Bernard Morland to Thomas Dalby Jago. Dated by the Huntington Library as later than 19 March 1820. Full transcript; the contemporary copy is not complete. Having seen the Marquess of Buckingham at Aylesbury where a Meeting was held on voting an Address from the County of Bucks to His Majesty, I took the opportunity of mentioning to his Lordship the extreme distress which Dr Phillimore & I had found from the report made to us, & from our own observation of the poor inhabitants of St Mawes. And as the Election was now over and the Individuals in question had been in no degree concerned in it, he thought that there was nothing, that need restrict him or us from interfering for their relief in case which seemed to be one of pure charity unmixed with any other considerations. Under these circumstances the Marquis desired me to remit to you twenty guineas on his account to be applied towards relieving the distress of the Poor families of St Mawes, in such a manner as may form an addition to their comforts without occasioning any portion of their present allowances from the Parish of St Mawes to be withdrawn from them. And Dr Phillimore & myself under the same circumstances beg to remit to you five guineas each to be applied in the same manner. You & Mr T Jago can consult together in what way you can most effectually prevent any portion of the Parish Relief being withdrawn from the Parties in consequence of [letter ends] |
