Dismissal of Bull at Aston Clinton 1850HEH ST 22 Volume 1 f53. Copy of letter from Thomas Beards to Richard Chandos. 21 October 1850. Extract. Chandos My Lord When at Aylesbury of June I told Bull that his services would no longer be required as the Aston Clinton estate was sold as also was the Wendover property. I think he said something about an agreement with Tindal & Parrott. I believe in 1836 I told him I had understood from the Duke which is the fact that no other agreement existed between them then that when (his) Bulls services was no longer required he could be instantly discharged the Duke often talked of suspending him and I believe he was kept on more form political motives than from any assistance he was to me. Barratt who had a much longer account to make up than Bull was discharged at once without more than a weeks notice at the time. I told Bull if he felt it was my doing as I fancy he did he could write to your Lordship on the subject he must have understood what was said as I told my son in Bulls presence to allow the Salary up to Midsummer on having the receipt altered up to that date which before was only written up to Lady day Young Simmons was also present. [Other business…] TB Stowe 21st Oct 1850 Letter to H Bull 1850 HEH ST 22 Volume 1 f53. Copy of letter from Thomas Beards to H Bull. 25 December 1850. H Bull Sir The letter you talk about requires no answer as I told you last June at the Audit the sale of the estate was to be completed at Midsummer and it was not likely Lord Chandos would keep an agent to do nothing. […] H Beards Stowe 25 Dec 1850 Buckingham BreweryHEH ST 22 Volume 2. Copy of letter from Thomas Beards to Mr H Humphrey. 14 January 1845. Stowe 14 Jan 1845 Mr H Humphrey Dear Sir I was from home in Somersetshire when you and you friends letter arrived respecting the Dukes Brewery at Buckingham. I now give you a description thereof & perhaps you will be so good as to forward it to your friend if not if you write I will write myself. The Brewery contains two liquor backs over the two coppices one underback one mash tun capable of mashing 10 quarters mashing machine complete set of coolies three working Squares in working room Refrigerator Hop Back a double set of cleansing casks on stands and pannes complete. The vats in the stoves and the 3b. 18. 9 gallons casks belongs to the Tenants. The malting will work 10 quarters & the whole of the machinery belongs to the Duke only three houses at present take beer from the Brewery. His Grace has not many Public Houses. I think a good capital trade may soon be established if a man of business had the [comm] the yard contains stables and sheds & I believe every convenience except a house & if that is required I have a neat small house close to the brewery that can be had if it would suit the rent of the house and Brewery together would be £170 per Annum & for the Brewery without the house £150 the premises were let to the present tenant for three years which expired at Xmas last he now hold for one year and I should not but his Grace be willing to let for a longer time to a gentleman of your recognition I can only say further that I firmly believe that a capital trade may soon be established.
