Stowe 1848 Sale Lots: Candlestick, Cup and Salt-Cellar

From the Stowe 1848 Sale Catalogue.

1087. A cup, of crystal, engraved in panels—mounted with silver gilt, engraved and set with fourteen large amethysts. W. Green.Esq. 12 1 6.

1089. A pair of exquisite taper-candlesticks, of agate—mounted with silver gilt, with masks, lizards, and insects of the most beautiful work. Sir Anthony Rothschild. 48 16 6. These candlesticks were very beautiful of workmanship, and generally believed to be antique. They were putting in at five guineas, from which sum they rapidly ran up to forty. The bidding then became more select and were chiefly confined to Sir Anthony Rothschild and one or two other parties: Sir Anthony at length secures their possession for forty-six and a half guineas. When the hammer fell, the manager of very well-known London house, rising from his seat, quietly remarked—“I made them and sold them for less than half the money.” This observation naturally occasioned some excitement in the room; and Mr Manson, who was selling, administered a rather sharp rebuke to the gentlemen alluded to. Having witnessed the occurrence, we are inclined to attribute the remark to a very natural feeling of surprise at the success of the manufacturers art in deceiving the connoisseur, and to acquit the party of any blame in the matter.

815. A salt-cellar, of silver gilt, in the form of a pedestal, with busts of Vespasian and his Empress, and two Limoge enamels, with the date 1540: on the cover is a figure of Napoleon, with sea-horses—a beautiful specimen of cinque-centro art. Barnard. 23 2 0.
