Lord Edward Thurlow
1731–1806. 1st Baron Thurlow. A distinguished lawyer who appeared with success in several important constitutional cases.
- 1770: Solicitor-general
- 1771-78: Attorney-General
- 1778: Lord chancellor as Baron Thurlow in A formidable presence on the woolsack, he dominated the House of Lords. Fox quipped: “no man could be so wise as Thurlow looked”
- 1792: Alienated Pitt. Pitt demanded George III to choose between himself and Thurlow: Thurlow retired.
