Lord Ebrington |
Hugh Fortescue Ebrington, Viscount, 2nd Earl Fortescue (1783-1861). Son of Hugh Fortescue and Hester Grenville. See family tree. Viscount Ebrington became the 2nd Earl on the death of his father in 1841. He was a first cousin of the first Duke. He was an MP for Buckingham from 1812 but found it difficult to follow the Grenvillite line. He quickly caused problems by declaring that he could not support Nugent Buckingham's sinecure tellership: Last night, however, at Oxford he received from Ebrington a letter that shocked and distressed him very much. It was neither more or less to say that he had from forgetfulness omitted to state either to my brother or himself that if there is a question for reducing my brother’s sinecure he cannot vote against it; he regrets this more because by what he hears that question in likely soon to come on; he therefore desires to be allowed to take the Chiltern Hundreds. [Thomas Grenville to George Grenville, HMC Fortescue X, p300] Ebrington opposed the suspension of Habeas Corpus in February 1817 and split with the Grenvillites. He then supported Burdett's parliamentary reform motion in May 1817. His actions were incompatible with the politics of the Grenvilles and he resigned. His brother George was offered the vacant seat but declined on learning he would have to follow the Buckingham line. A member of Brooks's Club. Sources |
