James Hamilton Stanhope

1788-1825. Son of the 3rd Earl Stanhope. Wobbly Grenvillite MP. 

  • Father: Charles Stanhope (1753-1816); first married to Hester Pitt (1758-1780)
  • Mother: Louisa Grenville (1758-1829); daughter of Henry Grenville and Margaret Eleanora Banks
  • Married: Frederica Murray in 1820 (1800-1823; ? died in childbirth or as a result); 2 children:
    • James Banks Stanhope (1821-1904)
    • Frederick Stanhope (1823-1823; ? died in childbirth)
  • A distinguished soldier in Spanish War
  • Elected MP for Buckingham in 1817

In June 1817, Stanhope sent Richard Temple a statement of his political philosophy, declaring he would resign if Buckingham disagreed. Conflict continued in 1818, when Stanhope attended a meeting called by Lord Liverpool to discuss the marriages and finances of the Royal Dukes. Buckingham was outraged and told Stanhope he would not support his re-election.

Stanhope committed suicide in 1825.
