Hugh Fortescue

1753-1841. Son of 2nd Baron Fortescue, a prominent Devon family. He was a loyal Grenvillite but not always keen to travel to London from his home at Castle Hill, Filleigh, Devonshire. He also had a seat at Ebrington, Gloucestershire.

  • Born: 12 March 1753
  • 1782: 4 May married Hester Grenville
  • 1784: elected MP for the borough of Beaumaris, Angelsea (a seat controlled by Bulkeley)
  • 1785: called to Lords on father's death
  • 1788: offered Treasureship of the Household by Nugent Buckingham but declined because of need for frequent attendance at the Royal Court.
  • 1789: created Earl Fortescue
  • Died: 16 June 1841

A member of Brooks's. He was succeeded by his son, Hugh Fortescue Ebrington
