John Joshua Proby

1751-1828. Son of John Proby and Hon. Elizabeth Allen.

Grenvillite MP. 1st Earl of and 2nd Baron of Carysfort. He was a politician and minor author of dramatic tragedies and poems.

• 19 March 1774: Married Elizabeth Osborne, daughter of William Osborne and Elizabeth Christmas. Sons:
  • William Lord Proby (1779-1804)
  • John Lord Proby (1780-1855)
  • Admiral Granville Leveson Proby, 3rd Earl of Carysfort (1782-1868)
• 1779: Fellow of the Royal Society 
• 1789: Joint-guardian of the Irish Rolls and Irish Earl of Carysfort
• 12 April 1787: Married Elizabeth Grenville; his second wife
• 1800: Ambassador to Berlin
• 1801: Ambassador to St Petersburgh
• 1801: Created Baron in UK
• 1806: Postmaster General; resigned 1807
• 1806: Returned MP for Huntingdonshire
• 1814: Returned MP for Huntingdonshire
• 7 April 1828: Death.

He had three sons by his first marriage and three daughters by his marriage to Elizabeth Grenville. 

The estates of the Proby family were centred around Elton Hall in Huntingdonshire and Glenart Castle, Arklow, County Wicklow.
