Georgiana Chandos

Georgiana was the short-lived daughter of the Anne Elletson and the third Duke of Chandos. Born 5 September, 1778. King George III and Queen Charlotte attended her baptism on 8 October 1778. She died the day after.

The following story is told in Amazing Grace (Turner, E.S. 1975) :

In the third Duke [of Chandos], pride was to blame for a domestic tragedy. In 1778 his infant daughter was due to be christened, with George III and his Queen as sponsors. For the occasion the Duke spent £3,000 on rich canopies, furnishing and brilliant illuminations at his London home. The christening clothes cost £700. Under the unaccustomed glare the babe took fright and was seized with convulsions. The ceremony was stopped, the royal and noble guests left and the victim of magnificence died the next day. (Sources cited: Annual Register 1778; Sir W Bessant, London in the Nineteenth Century).

Her death is reported in the Stowe 1848 Catalogue:

Georgiana Chandos (to whom Her Majesties George III and Queen Charlotte were sponsors in person), died the day after being baptised.

The Times confirmed the general story on the death of her father ten years later but gave a very different christian name:

Charlotte-Augusta Matilda, born Sept 5, 1778, who died Oct. 9 following, at whose Baptism their Majesties and the Princess Royal stood sponsors. Another daughter born Oct. 1779. [The Times: 1789/10/02]
