Lady Caroline [Brydges] Leigh

Lady Caroline was guardian to Anna Eliza during her courtship with Richard Temple, the future first Duke

Caroline was born on 20 March 1730 in London "very full of measles" (Baker, p255). She was

  • Eldest daughter of Henry, second Duke of Chandos and his first wife, Mary, daughter of the Earl of Aylesbury who died 1738.
  • Sister of the third Duke of Chandos

Caroline married James Leigh of Adlestrop, who was a great-nephew of the first Duke of Chandos. James Leigh died suddenly on 31 March 1774 aged 49. His memorial is in Adlestrop church.

They had one son, James Henry. He was second cousin to author Jane Austen  who visited him at Adlestrop in 1806; her uncle was vicar at Adlestrop. During the visit,  they went to see Stoneleigh, which became the model for Sotherton in Mansfield Park.

Lady Caroline Leigh died 8 December 1804, aged 74. Her memorial is in Adlestrop Church.
