Louis XVIII of France

Louis-Stanislas-Xavier (1755—1824). Comte de Provence; Monsieur; Louis XVIII; Comte de Lille. King of France and Navarre from 1814 until his death in 1824, except for a period in 1815 during Napoleon's return in the Hundred Days.

During his exile in Britain, Louis was morally and financially supported by Nugent Buckingham.

  • 1755: 17 November. Born fourth son of Louis, dauphin de France
  • 1755: Comte de Provence
  • 1774: Assumed title “Monsieur” after his brother became King of France (Louis XVI: 23 August 1754—21 January 1793) and becomes heir presumptive
  • 1791: Flees to Westphalia
  • 1793: 21 January. Proclaims himself Regent on death of his brother.
  • 1795: 8 June. Proclaims himself King Louis XVIII on the death of his nephew “the Dauphin”; often referred to as the Comte de Lille.
  • Lived in exile in Russia.
  • 1807?: Lands at Great Yarmouth. Lives at Holyrood House. Has an allowance of £20,000 (some sources report £16,000) a year from the British government.
  • 1807: November. Greeted by Nugent Buckingham at Gosfield, where they lived for two years. See description by Lady Jerningham.
  • 1808: 12 January. Arrive at Stowe for party, naming of the Bourbon Tower and planting of oaks.
  • 1809: Erects altar at Gosfield in thanks for Buckingham’s hospitality.
  • 1809: His entourage, now more than 130 strong, leaves Gosfield for Hartwell House, near Aylesbury. See Bell’s Weekly Messenger.
  • 1810: Louis visits Stowe, presenting Nugent Buckingham with a tenth-century manuscript copy of the Gospels, and a volume containing portraits and locks of hair of the members of the French royal family.
  • 1814: 4 April (or 6?). Napoleon abdicates.
  • 1814: 3 May. Louis returns to France.
  • 1815: 20 March. Napoleon returns to Paris from Elba.
  • 1815: February. Louis flees Paris for Ghent
  • 1815: 18 June. Battle of Waterloo.
  • 1815: 28 June. Louis restored to throne. Thereafter he ignores the Buckingham family.
  • 1824: 16 September. Death. Buried in the Saint Denis Basilica.
