Named after Admiral Lord Richard Howe, who defeated the French off Ushant in the 'Battle of the Glorious First of June', 1794

The port Fremantle in Western Australia, was named after him. He arrived at the Swan River Colony on May 2nd 1829, on the HMS "Challenger". On the 2 May 1829, he took possession of the western coast of Australia in the name of King George IV. Lieutenant-Governor James Stirling decided in June of the same year that Fremantle would be developed as a port. The new capital, Perth was founded 18 kilometres upstream on the Swan River.
