Charles Howe Fremantle

  • Born 1 June 1800
  • Named after Admiral Lord Richard Howe, who defeated the French off Ushant in the 'Battle of the Glorious First of June', 1794
  • Married Isabella Wedderburn on 8 October 1836. She was previously married to James Wedderburn and was the daughter of David Lyon
  • The port Fremantle in Western Australia, was named after him. He arrived at the Swan River Colony on May 2nd 1829, on the HMS "Challenger". On the 2 May 1829, he took possession of the western coast of Australia in the name of King George IV.  Lieutenant-Governor James Stirling decided in June of the same year that Fremantle would be developed as a port.  The new capital, Perth was founded 18 kilometres upstream on the Swan River.
